Paid Insiders Are the New Attack Vector. AI Is Making It Worse

Cybercriminals are changing how they break into organizations, and the shift is accelerating.

A recent article from Cybersecurity Insiders highlighted an emerging trend: threat actors are actively recruiting employees inside telecommunications providers, banks, and technology companies, offering direct payment for access to systems, data, or operational assistance. Rather than hacking in from the outside, attackers are increasingly buying legitimate access from within.

This strategy is proving effective—and artificial intelligence is amplifying its impact.

From Breaches to Purchased Access

According to the report, recruitment offers are appearing on underground forums and encrypted messaging platforms, often specifying the exact access attackers want—customer records, identity systems, cloud consoles, or administrative tools. Payments are commonly offered in cryptocurrency and may be one-time or ongoing.

This approach dramatically reduces attacker risk. When actions are performed by authorized users, activity blends into normal business workflows, bypassing many traditional security controls. What would once trigger alerts now often appears routine.

Why Telecom, Banking, and Call Centers Are Targeted

Both public reporting and real-world experience point to a clear pattern.

  • Telecommunications employees have access to subscriber identity systems and SIM management tools, making them valuable targets for SIM swap fraud and identity takeover.

Paid insider activity is rarely driven by a single factor.

Financial pressure plays a significant role, particularly in hourly, contract, or outsourced roles. Recruitment offers are often framed as low effort and low risk.

That perception is reinforced when actions fall within normal job responsibilities and high-volume workflows. Over time, repetitive access to sensitive systems can normalize high-risk behavior, lowering resistance to misuse.

AI further reduces barriers by lowering the skill and effort required. Automated data discovery, extraction, and summarization allow individuals without deep technical expertise to cause meaningful damage quickly and quietly.

How AI Accelerates Insider Abuse

AI acts as a force multiplier across the insider threat lifecycle. It enables faster reconnaissance, automated data handling, and convincing justifications for unusual activity. In practice, this means insider-enabled attacks are faster, quieter, and more scalable than before.
